The most prominent motive of supernatural stories set in a mysterious forest is the cabin deep in the woods. Normally a cabin or hut is a metaphor for protection. This is where we hope to find a shelter for the night, maybe the wanderer will find company after a long time of isolation. However in the horror story the cabin in the forest often signals imminent danger, perhaps death, and we would have hoped that we never met what is living inside the walls of the hut.<\/p>\n
Hansel and Gretel met the witch. In the Blairwitch project the rotten cabin is the end of the story.<\/p>\n
The cabin in the woods can be a place for recreation but it can also become the place of ultimate horrors. Sensory deprivation and \u00a0spending too much time indoors lead to “cabin fever”. Then the most dangerous enemy inside the cabin is not some monster, its you or your companions.<\/p>\n
If you find a lonely cabin in the woods you may ask what kind of stories happened there. And why did someone built that cabin? Cabins were often hiding places or somebody was looking for loneliness. A lot of drama can happen in a small space far away from civilization.<\/p>\n
And in some cases the cabin is only a masquerade, it could even be the most dangerous trap on our journey through the forest.<\/p>\n
The “Black Lodge” in David Lynch’s legendary TV-series “Twin Peaks” is a mythical place. It clearly belongs to the Otherworld, “time have no meaning there and space is fractured between similar rooms”, inhabitants speak in riddles or backwards” (Twin Peaks Wiki).<\/p>\n
The lodge is also a place for initiation, seems to be part of the “heroes journey”:\u00a0“The shadow-self of the White Lodge. The legend says that every spirit must pass through there on the way to perfection. There, you will meet your own shadow self. My people call it ‘The Dweller on the Threshold’ … But it is said, if you confront the Black Lodge with imperfect courage, it will utterly annihilate your soul.”(Deputy Hawk, Twin Peaks).<\/i><\/p>\n
Situated in an extra dimensional dimension, the Black Lodge is a good example of the treacherous reality<\/a> in the intermediate realm between our world and the Otherworld. In “Twin Peaks” it is basically a mysterious place<\/a> with an evil energy: it corrupts the person’s soul, making those easily corruptible become malicious and twisted” (Twin Peaks Wiki) – it’s defined as the “evil that lurks in those woods”.<\/p>\n A cabin in the wood seems to be the perfect disguise for something, which is not what it seems – there is also a horror movie “Cabin In The Woods” taking this conception as a premise. \u00a0But can it happen also in real life?<\/p>\n There are records of cabins which couldn’t be found on any maps. Or somebody has seen a cabin and couldn’t find the way when he looks for it a second time. Of course the reason is normally confusion and disorientation on longer trips.<\/p>\n But here is a story from Cades Cove, Smoky Mountains, supposed to happen in 2001:<\/p>\n “The Cove is a broad valley surrounded by mountains and contains a number of old structures from the pioneer days. There is a lady who lived there as a child, and she spends her time searching for old farm sites. Usually, the buildings are gone, but there is other evidence that a farmstead was there at one time. She said she saw a cabin in the distance against a line of trees. Being familiar with the area, she knew there was no cabin there. However she took a picture and you can clearly see a cabin with a tin roof, chimney, and windows. There is even a shadow that could be the shadow of the cabin. Her husband who was with her didn’t see it until he saw the picture. So they went back with their son and took pictures with a video camera, digital camera and a film camera. The cabin was still there, so they walked over to it and it was gone” (rinkworks forum).
